Frequently Asked Questions

Which package is best for me?

Newlywed Starter Set ($219): The best value if you want to handle your name change and set up your estate plan as a couple in one step. Two of the biggest adulting to-dos after marriage, done.

NewlyNamed Box:
The easiest way to change your name. Your personalized kit ships to your door with everything pre-filled, stamped, and ready to go.

Print at Home: If you have access to a printer and don't mind gathering postage and envelopes.

Who is NewlyNamed for?

NewlyNamed is focused on helping anyone change their name due to marriage or divorce.

We also support court-ordered name changes (first, middle, and last) but we are unable to help you obtain a court order.

Our name change kits assume you have a legal name change document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order).

How does NewlyNamed work?

Step 1: Select the name change package that works best for you (Newlywed Starter Set, NewlyNamed Box, or Print at Home).

Step 2: You will then fill out a form with your basic personal information and select your personal accounts (banks, credit cards, loyalty programs, etc.). We will never ask you to enter sensitive information like your Social Security number, Passport number, account numbers, etc.

Step 3: Our software goes to work and creates your personalized name change kit.

Step 4: You'll receive your name change kit via mail or downloadable PDF. Your kit includes applications (social security, passport, driver's license, voter registration, etc.) and step-by-step instructions so you can confidently complete your name change.

Step 5: Sign, date and submit each application. The step-by-step instructions in the kit will guide you through your entire name change.

What's in a NewlyNamed Box?

Everything you need to change your name, personalized to you and ready to use.

A NewlyNamed Box includes step-by-step instructions and applications for:

  • Social Security
  • U.S. Passport
  • State Driver's License (REAL ID)
  • State Vehicle Title & Registration
  • State Voter Registration
  • United States Postal Service (USPS)
  • Personal Accounts

We also provide name change step-by-step instructions and applications for your Personal Accounts from our database of 4,000+ organizations:

  • Bank accounts
  • Credit cards
  • Investment accounts
  • Auto loans/financing
  • TSA Pre✓ and Global Entry
  • Airline loyalty programs
  • Hotel loyalty programs
  • Professional licenses and certifications (state nursing licenses, state medical licenses, state teaching licenses, state CPA licenses, bar associations, etc.)
  • Subscription/membership services
  • and more…
What do I need to use NewlyNamed?

You need a marriage certificate (if married), a divorce decree (if divorced), or a court order (if you are changing your first name or creating a new name).

If divorced, your divorce decree must state that you are able to change your name to a previous name (i.e. birth name or maiden name).

Is NewlyNamed safe?

Yes! We DO NOT collect any sensitive personal information (such as your Social Security number, passport number, driver's license number, financial account numbers, etc.) when creating your name change kit.

Additionally, our website is secured with 128-bit SSL encryption and we have active security monitoring. We take security seriously and follow all the latest security guidelines to ensure your information is secure.

What personal information do you need from me?

We ask for basic information like name, address, date of birth, height, and hair color. We will never ask you for sensitive information like your social security number, passport number, driver's license number, account numbers, etc.

Does NewlyNamed work in my state?

Yes! We cover all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. We've got everything you need for your state.

What documents do you fill out for me?

NewlyNamed pre-fills three government applications on your behalf: Social Security (SS-5), U.S. Passport (DS-82), and Voter Registration. For your state driver's license, vehicle title, and vehicle registration, we provide the correct state-specific forms and step-by-step instructions, but these are not pre-filled. We also provide name change instructions and applications for personal accounts including banks, credit cards, investment accounts, and loyalty programs.

Will I have to pay additional fees?

NewlyNamed kits cost $49 (Print at Home) or $99 (NewlyNamed Box). Beyond that, all fees go directly to government agencies — not to NewlyNamed. Changing your name with the Social Security Administration is free. A passport renewal or first-time passport application requires a $130 fee paid to the U.S. State Department. Driver's license, vehicle title, and vehicle registration fees vary by state.

When will I receive my kit?

NewlyNamed Box: We will process your order in one business day. Shipping takes 2-5 business days.

Print at Home: You will receive immediate access to your name change kit.

I have a flight booked in my old/maiden name. When should I start?

Don't stress! You can start your name change now even if you have future travel plans. NewlyNamed will guide you through the entire process!

If you have international travel booked in your old/maiden name:

You can start changing your name with the Social Security Administration (SSA) and your DMV now, but you must wait until you return home from your trips before updating your passport. The name on your passport must match your travel reservations/boarding pass. Your current passport in your old/maiden name will remain valid until its expiration date even if you update your name with the SSA or your DMV.

If you have domestic travel booked in your old/maiden name:

You can start changing your name with the SSA now, but you must wait to update your passport OR REAL ID driver's license until you have returned from any travel booked in your maiden/old name. Your travel ID document (such as your passport or REAL ID driver's license) must match your travel reservations/boarding pass. Your current passport and REAL ID in your old/maiden name will remain valid until its expiration date even if you update your name with the SSA.

I moved. Can I change my name and address at the same time?

Yes! Your name change kit will help you update your name and address at the same time. If you moved to a new state, your name change kit will walk you through the process of obtaining the proper documents for your new state. You do not need to change your name in your old state before moving. You can obtain a driver's license in your new name by submitting your current driver's license in your old/maiden name.

Does NewlyNamed work for same-sex marriage name changes?

Yes! NewlyNamed works same-sex marriage name changes as long as you have a certified marriage certificate or a court order authorizing your name change. Every state has its own marriage laws and/or name change laws which you will need to follow.

I got married (or divorced) a while ago. Will NewlyNamed work for me?

Yes! Your legal name change document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) doesn't expire. We've helped countless people who've been married (or divorced) for years and decide now is the right time to change their last name.

Can I use NewlyNamed to change my first name?

Yes! As long as you have already obtained a court order through your city/county courthouse OR if your marriage certificate lists your desired first name as your married first name.

If you're changing your name due to marriage, your marriage certificate must list your desired first name as your married first name. If it doesn't, you will need to obtain a court order before starting the name change process.

Our name change kits assume you have your legal name change document (court order, marriage certificate, or divorce decree) in your physical possession.

I'm not a U.S. citizen. Can I use NewlyNamed?

Yes, our name change kits work for non-U.S. citizens living in the United States. However, you will need to update the name on your Green Card (or primary immigration document) before starting the name change process. NewlyNamed will assist with updating your U.S. documents and organizations. We do not assist in updating immigration documents (such as a green card) or foreign passports because we do not want to interfere with one's immigration status or naturalization process. Our name change kits assume you already have an updated green card (or primary immigration document) showing your new name.

Can I gift a NewlyNamed Box?

Yes! You can gift a NewlyNamed Box by purchasing a NewlyNamed Box gift card. We provide gift cards because we need to collect information from the person changing their name to create their NewlyNamed Box (with a personalized name change kit inside).

What's included in the Couples Estate Plan?

The Couples Estate Plan covers both you and your partner. Here's exactly what you'll each receive:

Last Will and Testament: Outlines how you want your assets distributed, names a guardian for any children, and designates someone you trust to carry out your wishes after you're gone.

Advance Healthcare Directive: Documents your medical preferences if you're ever unable to speak for yourself, and designates someone to make healthcare decisions on your behalf.

Financial Power of Attorney: Authorizes someone you trust to manage your finances — paying bills, handling accounts, filing taxes — if you're ever unable to do so yourself.
All documents are state-specific, attorney-designed, and customized to you. Once complete, you can download them instantly or have them shipped to your door.

Why it matters: Most couples put estate planning off for years. The Newlywed Starter Set makes it something you can check off together, right now, in under 30 minutes.

What is a Last Will and Testament?

A Last Will and Testament is a legal document that outlines how you want your assets distributed after you pass away. It lets you name beneficiaries, designate a guardian for any children, and appoint someone you trust to carry out your wishes.

Most people in their 20s and 30s assume this can wait. It can't. Getting it done now, while life feels simple, is exactly when it's easiest.

Why it matters: Without one, the state decides what happens to your money, your belongings, and your kids. Not you.

The Newlywed Starter Set includes a Last Will and Testament for both you and your partner, so you can check this off the list together.

What is an Advance Healthcare Directive?

An Advance Healthcare Directive is a legal document that spells out your medical preferences if you're ever unable to speak for yourself. It tells doctors and loved ones what treatments you do or don't want, and designates someone you trust to make healthcare decisions on your behalf.

Nobody wants to think about this in their 30s. But if something unexpected happens and this document doesn't exist, your family is left guessing — and in some cases, fighting — over what you would have wanted.

Why it matters: It takes minutes to set up and gives everyone peace of mind for years.

The Newlywed Starter Set includes an Advance Healthcare Directive for both you and your partner. Two people covered, one step.

What is a Financial Power of Attorney?

A Financial Power of Attorney is a legal document that authorizes someone you trust to manage your finances if you're ever unable to do so yourself. Think paying bills, managing bank accounts, handling investments, or filing taxes on your behalf.

Here's what most young couples don't realize: without one, even your spouse can face serious legal hurdles accessing your accounts in an emergency.

Why it matters: Setting this up now means that if life throws you a curveball, the person you trust most can actually step in and help.

The Newlywed Starter Set includes a Financial Power of Attorney for both you and your partner. It's one of the smartest things you can do as a couple, and it takes less time than you think.

Do I really need an estate plan in my 20s or 30s?

Honestly, yes. Estate planning sounds like something your parents do, but it's really just a set of documents that make sure the people you love are protected if something happens to you. Getting married is actually the perfect time to do it. Your life just got more intertwined with someone else's — your finances, your home, your future kids. Having these documents in place means both of you are covered from day one, not someday.

Why is right now the best time to set up an estate plan?

Because you're already doing the hard work. You just got married, which means your finances, your home, and your future are now legally connected to another person. If something happened tomorrow, your partner needs to be protected — and so do you.

Most couples mean to get a will. Very few actually do it, because it never feels urgent until it is. A Newlywed Starter Set removes every excuse: no lawyer appointments, no confusing paperwork, no separate purchase to make. You handle your name change and your estate plan in one step, while you're already in the mindset to get things done.

Why it matters: The best time to set up an estate plan is before you need one. That's right now.

Are these documents legally valid?

Yes. The estate planning documents included in the Newlywed Starter Set are attorney-designed, state-specific, and fully legally valid.

Once you complete your estate plan through our partner LifeLegacy, you'll receive documents customized to your state's laws and your specific wishes. To make them legally binding, you'll sign them after receiving or downloading them.

Why it matters: A lot of people assume online estate planning is a shortcut that won't hold up. It isn't. These are the same documents an estate planning attorney would prepare for you, at a fraction of the cost and time.

Who is LifeLegacy?

LifeLegacy is a trusted online estate planning platform that has helped thousands of couples and individuals create legally valid Wills, Healthcare Directives, and Powers of Attorney — without the cost or hassle of hiring a lawyer. Their estate planning tools are available in all 50 states.

Why is The Newlywed Starter Set priced for two?

Because estate planning only works if both partners are covered. A Will, Healthcare Directive, and Financial Power of Attorney for one person leaves the other completely unprotected — and most couples don't realize that until it's too late.

The Newlywed Starter Set includes a full Couples Estate Plan, meaning both you and your partner each receive every document you need. Not one set. Two.

Why it matters: Getting married means your lives are officially intertwined. Your legal documents should be too. The Newlywed Starter Set is the only product that handles both of your name changes and both of your estate plans in one step.

Do both my partner and I need our own estate plan documents?

Yes, and this is something a lot of couples don't realize. Each person needs their own Will, Healthcare Directive, and Financial Power of Attorney. That's why a Newlywed Starter Set includes a Couples Estate Plan — both of you are fully covered, not just one.

How long does it take to complete the estate plan?

Most couples complete their estate plan in under 30 minutes. LifeLegacy's guided process walks you through everything step by step — no legal jargon, no confusing forms, no attorney's office required.

Here's how it works:

  1. Answer a series of simple questions about your wishes, your assets, and who you'd like to designate for key roles.
  2. Review your customized documents generated specifically for you and your partner based on your answers.
  3. Once your documents are created, you’ll receive clear signing instructions based on your state and document type. To make them legally binding, follow the included instructions for signing, witnesses, and notarization where required.

You don't have to complete it in one sitting either. Your progress is saved so you can pick up right where you left off.

Why it matters: The number one reason people put off estate planning is because they think it's going to be a big, complicated project. It isn't.

Is the estate plan complicated to complete?

Not at all. The Couples Estate Plan included in the Newlywed Starter Set is designed to be straightforward and guided. You answer a series of questions about your wishes and the platform generates your legal documents. No lawyer's office required. Most couples complete everything in under 30 minutes.

Should I wait until my name change is official before completing my estate plan?

We actually recommend completing your name change first. When you sign legal documents like a Will, your name needs to match the new name on your photo ID. Doing things in order (name change first, estate plan second) means everything lines up cleanly from the start. The Newlywed Starter Set is designed with exactly this sequence in mind.

We're not married yet. Can I purchase the Newlywed Starter Set now?

Yes! You can purchase any NewlyNamed product before your wedding. We'll walk you through everything in the right order.

You can start your name change using your NewlyNamed Box once you receive your marriage certificate - the legal document you receive after your wedding ceremony.

After your name change is official and your new photo ID arrives, you can complete the Couples Estate Plan.

My partner isn't with me right now. Is this something we need to fill out together?

Not at all! Each partner fills out their own estate plan separately, at their own pace, through LifeLegacy's guided process. You don't need to be sitting next to each other to complete it.

You can purchase today, get started on your end, and your partner can complete their section whenever they're ready. Your estate plan never expires, so there's no pressure to do it all at once.

    Impressive

I did a lot of research into estate planning and most services were charging $300+ just for a basic couple's plan. My wife needed to change her name too so it made sense get this packaged set. The estate plan was super easy for us to fill out. We were impressed!

    Glad we did this

I bought it mainly for the name change kit which was great. But having our will and power of attorney done before our baby arrived was a huge relief.
